Wardell CORE Bulletin

Hi Subscriber First Name and welcome to everyone who is new to this mailing list.

To those of you who follow our communications on Facebook most of this newsletter will be repeated, however, in hope of reaching those who is not on social media we will try and offer this semi-regular digest by email.

We continue to depend on you all to help to ensure your family, friends and neighbours have access to information and support.

As always; mental health support, cups of tea, wifi / internet access, printing, community shower, community laundry, take home meals, company and connection available daily.

Please drop in to make a booking to see counsellors or therapists as spaces are limited.

All our services and support remain free to access for people in need. Contributions by donation are welcome.

We would like to offer such sincere gratitude to the Orange Sky Laundry team who have been offering such an amazing service in support of our community since the flood. They have committed to remaining in the area and are currently offering bright smiles and access to laundry facilities twice a week. Tuesday mornings and Saturday afternoons. Drop in with your washing and stop for a cup of tea and a chat.

If this is something you would like to help out with we are looking for a few locals to sign up as volunteer team members for either regular or casual shifts.

Our aim is to make sure everyone in our community has power on properly and accessible throughout the house.

** Priority for homes that are uninsured and running extensions from outlets directly from the fuse box.

We are currently seeking expressions of interest from contract electrical teams and charity support.

Did you know we have free WIFI ? - bring your laptop/phone/tablet and ask for the password. Sit in the garden and grab cup of tea or coffee.

We can also offer printing and some technical support if you require help with emailing insurance agencies and service providers.

Mothers Gathering : "women nurturing women"

Tuesdays 10-12 : Facilitated support by Al Mountjoy (Doula), Mel Kemp (Early Childhood Educator). We also have access to naturopaths / lactation specialists to help with pre and post natal concerns

Bring your children all ages welcome and join us for a morning tea and meet new friends.

We also have a dedicated fb group to support new families and parents

Huge thanks to everyone who has been bringing in their cans and bottles for recycling - we have now raised over $1000 from Return and Earn.

Recycle for a cause ! Bring in your drink containers and help us fundraise for Wardell.

Please provide only the eligible containers as pictured, uncrushed and with barcodes visible. We prefer them unmixed and in boxes if possible. Deliver to the WardellCORE back gate for collection.

So much gratitude to Robert Whiston for his time and enthusiasm to help with this great fundraising project.

Craft Club is on again : Join in for a casual and crafty catchup, have a cuppa and get creative. Nell will be facilitating a morning of bead, button and mix medium crafting.

This week will be focussing on hats for summer - please bring your own hat and feel free to bring along any craft projects or ideas that you have.

A range of materials will be available and you are invited to bring your own.

Tea, coffee and morning tea provided. All welcome. Free to join. Wednesday 10:30-1:00

Get creative !

Due to technical issues we have extended the Wardell Photography Competition III until the end of the month. Submit your entry and vote for the peoples choice !

This months theme is about how you "RELAX".

Send in a photograph that is all about being cool, calm and collected. Amidst disaster recovery how do you help yourself relax? Or perhaps what inspires you to unwind? Show us an image that says tranquility, peace, rest or serenity. Remember a picture can say a thousand words.

Conditions : Photographs from all devices will be accepted, however no photoshop editing. In 100 words or less tell us why this image makes you want to recline and put your feet up. Your photo description is an assessed criteria. Be creative, show us an image of something unique.

Photographs will assessed by the following criteria : Technique - Composition - Creativity - Addressing the theme - Narrative. This month the team at Northern Rivers Community Gallery will once again help us out with judging the winning entry. Submissions open 1st September and will now close 5pm 30th September

A reminder that we offer a well stocked community pantry to anyone who needs access to pantry staples and fresh food items. Keeping everyone well fed is a high priority and we couldn’t possibly offer this support without the amazing support of charities such as FoodBank Australia, OzHarvest. We also have a good range of basic toiletries, cleaning products, baby food and formula, personal care items and other consumables.

This service is available by donation.

We are also still offering a range of ready to eat meals provided by the community and the Ballina Hot Meals centre.

TAKE THIS SURVEY to better support disaster recovery systems.

A community survey is now open for flood and landslide affected residents of the Northern Rivers to complete.

The purpose of this survey is to build an independent record of community recovery from the 2022 Northern Rivers floods for people across the region. It will inform the development of improved support systems and policy, with a particular focus on community-led recovery efforts. It can also provide learnings to support increased community resilience and adaptive capacity in the face of natural disasters.

This project is led by Dr Hanabeth Luke of Southern Cross University. The University has partnered with formal and informal community hubs and recovery centres, including Resilient Lismore, Wardell CORE, and Woodburn Recovery Centres, which have been an integral part of the response to the Northern Rivers flood events.

Who are WardellCORE ?

Wardell CORE continues as an entirely volunteer team of community members who share a desire to support our region through disaster recovery and to build community connection and resilience.

Wardell CORE is an independent not-for-profit association supported by a wide range of partners, charities and community groups to provide humanitarian aid, mental health support, access to goods, services and social connection.

Wardell CORE is a community facility located at the “Old Bank” 3 Sinclair Street, Wardell. We are open 9am - 4pm, Tuesday - Saturday.
