We have been donated a range of lovely gifts to share with the community to make sure that everyone feels special this Christmas. These gifts have been given for distribution to the flood affected and in order to ensure that we have something for everyone we will need to make a general assessment of need.

Intent : The Christmas Gift Market will provide access to a small range of free gifts to support community members.

We have >

• new toys and clothes for infants to 10 year olds

• kitchen wares for adults

Gifts are limited and we will prioritise residents of the Wardell district and surrounding areas.

Disclaimer : We may not have an age-appropriate gift for all children / youth and will take details for any youth who are not able to be supported on the day and endeavour to match them with a gift for Christmas.

Living School livens up Wardell with an amazing rock concert

Huge thanks to the incredibly talented students from the Living School who joined us in Wardell last week for a spectacular performance. Truly a treat to see and hear ! The performance was a feature of the school’s term dedicated to “service to others” and the student’s desire was the gift the local Wardell school with an uplifting perforce in recognition of the disruptive and challenging year.

We can’t thank you all enough for giving us all a warm heart and such a great medley of upbeat live music. Big thanks to all the teachers, parents and community members who showed up to enjoy and support.

Pop-up Info Sessions for Resilient Homes Program

With many of the previously advertised community information sessions now fully booked, including the Ballina session on Wednesday 7 December, we have managed to negotiate with the Northern Rivers Reconstruction Corporation to hold one of the Community Information Pop-Ups here in Wardell.

The Pop-Up session will be held in Wardell on Thursday 8 December, from 10am-12pm at Wardell CORE, 3 Sinclair Street, Wardell.

2022 Flood Response and Recovery - Children's Needs Assessment

We are honoured to have been recognised and featured in UNICEF’s most recent publication which explored and considered the needs of children in disaster recovery through 6 hey impact areas :

• Education

• Children’s mental health and wellbeing

• Physical health

• Physical environment

• Safety

• Recreation and play

The report highlighted that young people are highly exposed and particularly vulnerable in disasters and that they are often hidden or overlooked within the recovery cycle. The research also demonstrated the essential role that strong grass-roots recovery organisations play in providing effective protective factors for young people and supporting youth and their families through trauma recovery

This research substantiates the need for dedicated youth support programs in our community and we are hopeful that we will have funding to activate a youth space and more support for young people in 2023.

We are so grateful of UNICEF’s support and we look forward to working with them in the future.
