Fishing Competition

Its happening this Saturday / Sunday ! We are joining the NSW Gone Fishing Weekend and hosting a fishing comp here in Wardell. Wet a line and join in. Heaps of great prize’s and give-aways. Free BBQ Lunch on Sunday, bring in your entries from 12noon - 1pm.

Here are the general rules of the Wardell Fishing Comp

• Registrations can be made at Wardell CORE from 9.00am-2:00pm Saturday

• After you have registered get fishing ! and make sure you keep your registration number handy.

• All species are eligible - however there will be only one winner for each category.

• Categories include - open adult [ 1st and 2nd ], open junior (u 14) [ 1st and 2nd ]

• Anglers can fish anytime between their registration the close time 12noon Sunday.

• Winners are measured by LENGTH; and are judged by the distance from nose to the tail fork or end of scales.

• Fishing Zones : all fish must be caught in the Richmond River

• Fish must exceed relevant state minimum size limits.

• Photos must be taken at the time and place of capture and feature measured length and registration number provided.

• Fish that show any signs of stretching, mutilation or improper handling will be disqualified.

• Catch and release is highly encouraged.

Fishing and boating licenses are the responsibility of all anglers.

Calling all young people !

We have a great program running next weekend where we will explore our regions river health and how we can use youth voices to create projects and beneficial outcomes for our river and community

Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th. Lunch and snacks included. Sessions run from 9am - 3pm.

SPACES ARE LIMITED TO PLEASE GET IN TOUCH TO RESERVE YOUR SPOT.

If you have a budding young scientist, naturalist, outdoors enthusiast, environmentalist or keen fishers in your family we will be talking river health, exploring the results from our last field trip and discussing how we can work together to protect our river.

• Identifying threats to river health and the concerns of young people

• Review water testing results and other data

• Develop ideas for youth action !

• What would you like you like to see happen and how would you like to be a part of making change.

• We will be presenting our findings and ideas to the community at the Wardell Gone Fishing Day on Sunday.

This program is run in conjunction with the amazing team at OzGreen and supported by the NSW Department of Regional Youth.

October marks Mental Health Month, and in 2023, the theme is 'We all have a role to play.' This year's theme encourages each of us to champion activities and ideas that can positively impact our lives and the lives of those around us.

Mental Health Month is a prompt for everyone to reflect on their mental well-being, whether or not they have a personal experience with mental illness. It underscores the significance of good mental health in our daily lives and promotes a culture of seeking help when needed.

What role will you embrace?

• You could become a community champion, connect your friends, family and neighbours to vital mental health services.

• Be an advocate in your workplace by motivating your workmates to prioritise their mental health and engage with support.

• Will you shine as a school ambassador, and think about how to improve mental health awareness among our youth, their teachers, and staff.

• Become a compassionate ally, offer a listening ear and support to those facing difficult times or a mental health challenges.

• Take charge of your own well-being, dedicate some time this month to explore your mental health and ways to sustain your inner health all year-round.

During Mental Health Month there are lots of opportunities to engage in conversations about general mental health, dispel myths, address mental health challenges, and share strategies for supporting both ourselves and those around us through times of mental ill-health.

Tuning in to Kids (TIK) is an evidenced based, emotion-focused parenting course that supports parents/carers to recognise, understand and manage their own and their children’s emotions.

TIK has proven success in improving children’s emotional intelligence which can reduce big behaviours.

Who is it for?

All Parents and Carers from our region. Royal Far West are delivering TIK as part of a local Community Recovery Program.

Where?

Small group sessions will take place in person at Wardell CORE, 3 Sinclair St, Wardell NSW 2477

When?

The course runs during the school term, with 1 session per week over 8 weeks. Each session is 2 hours in length. The group will run on Tuesdays, commencing 10th October, 2023.

Social Ceramics

Join us for this two part workshop series and introduction to social ceramics. 

Friday October 13: handbuilding with clay. This session will focus on simple hand-building techniques such as pinch pots, coil pots and sculpting figurines. 

Friday October 27:This session will focus on glazing the pieces made in the first week's session using colourful underglazes. 

No experience necessary, anyone can learn some simple techniques for great results. Grab a cuppa, roll up your sleeves and join the fun.

Youth Mental Health First Aid

A comprehensive course for any adult who lives or works with youth and adolescents

Australian Government health studies indicate one in six adolescents will meet criteria for some type of mental illness in any given year. Natural disasters, pandemics and great disruptions in young peoples lives can put even more strain on their mental health and often we feel ill-equipped to provide support.

We will be offering a 14 Hour Youth Mental Health First Aid course over 2 consecutive Saturdays with a local and advanced trainer to teach practical and evidence-based skills to assess, approach and assist a young person developing a mental health problem or in a crisis situation.

Snake Awareness 

Education session with The Wildlife Twins

Presentation discussing local snakes, their behaviours, general identification, first aid and how to avoid a snake bite.

Get up close and personal with Blue tongue lizards, pythons and a lace monitor who will be present to help convey information and used for hands on experience after the presentation.

Join us for this great opportunity to learn and become more familiar with our amazing local reptiles and feel more prepared this snake season.

Grow Well Wardell

We are delighted to welcome Steve McGrane to Wardell to learn from his decades of experience to become more successful and purposeful home gardeners. In this workshop we’ll learn about the relationship between soil and plant health, how to understand your soils, interpret pests and disease and grow healthy plants and food year round. If you want to level up on your gardening skills this fun and practical workshop is not to be missed. There will be lots of prizes, giveaways and seeds for the coming season! 

Steve is an agriculturalist, blogger, educator, national gardening magazine writer (Good Organic Gardener) and ABC presenter with qualifications and experience across a broad range of horticultural industry activities. Steve has spent 25 years in conventional horticulture/organic agriculture, studying, implementing and devising various innovative approaches to reducing our footprint on the planet. His passion is obvious for gardening as his own garden in Coffs Harbour has been used for education and display for over 20 years.  Steve has developed a refined understanding and application of blending ornamental and productive gardens in urban landscapes.

Disasters are disruptive to one's state of normalcy, including daily routines, activities of daily living, employment, transportation, housing, and social relations.

Disasters can take a serious toll on the mental health of individuals and our communities at large. Disasters don't happen and then conclude; they are termed "disasters" because they have far-ranging and long-standing impacts on people's lives and it is well known that at a year to 18 months after a catastrophe that untreated or unrecognised trauma presents as increasing anxiety and worsening depression.

While in many instances access to help and mental health support after a disaster is often really challenging - we are fortunate to be able to offer constant and FREE support.

Wardell’s Wellbeing Program offers a dedicated space for professional counselling services and qualified mental health supporters for the community and Wardell district.

Our facilities and programs are an essential asset for our community’s recovery and mental health. We are privileged to have the support of supported by Healthy North Coast to be able to provide this safe and welcoming space and offer a range of support with our amazing team of registered counsellors and mental health workers.

We provide a drop-in centre, appointments on demand and referral services available 5 days a week.

We can also offer outcalls and outreach or consultation by phone. Our mental health services are free, discreet and confidential.
